Preparation that targets what matters

The 11+ and 13+ examinations vary significantly between schools and regions. A generic approach to preparation is inadequate. My first step with every family is to establish exactly which schools the pupil is sitting for, what the exam format involves, and where the pupil's current performance sits relative to the standard required. From there, I build a preparation plan that focuses effort where it will have the greatest impact.

For the 11+, the core components typically include English comprehension, creative or extended writing, mathematics, and verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Some schools also include an interview or group exercise. I cover all of these areas, but the balance of time spent on each is determined by the pupil's needs, not by a fixed programme.

Mathematics preparation at this level focuses on the areas most commonly examined: arithmetic fluency, problem-solving, fractions, percentages, ratio, area and perimeter, and basic algebra. I ensure that pupils are not only able to reach the correct answer but can do so efficiently and under time pressure, because speed matters in these examinations.

English preparation covers both comprehension and composition. For comprehension, I teach pupils to read questions carefully, locate relevant evidence in the text, and construct answers that are precise and well-supported. For creative writing, I focus on structure, vocabulary, and the ability to write with control and flair within a limited timeframe.

Verbal and non-verbal reasoning require a different kind of preparation. These papers test pattern recognition, logical thinking, and the ability to work quickly through unfamiliar question types. I introduce the main question formats systematically, build familiarity through practice, and teach strategies for the types of questions that pupils find most difficult.

Where schools require an interview, I provide coaching on common question formats, appropriate conduct, and how to speak about interests and experiences with confidence. This aspect of preparation is often neglected, but a strong interview can distinguish a pupil from other candidates with similar scores.

"The 13+ process is incredibly high-pressure, but Jordan was the calm in the storm. He focused on my Verbal Reasoning and Essay technique, but more importantly, he taught me how to manage exam nerves. I was absolutely delighted when I was offered a place at my first-choice school!"

How I teach
this subject

School-specific research

I establish the exact format, content, and standard required by each target school and tailor the preparation accordingly.

Diagnostic assessment

An initial assessment identifies the pupil's strengths and weaknesses so preparation time is spent where it is most needed.

Timed practice

Regular practice under exam conditions builds the speed, accuracy, and composure that these examinations demand.

Confidence building

Entrance exams are high-stakes for young pupils. I build confidence progressively so that performance improves as the exam approaches.

Interview preparation, school
selection, and ongoing support

Interview Preparation

Many selective schools require an interview alongside written papers. I prepare pupils for common question formats, help them articulate their interests and experiences with confidence, and practise appropriate conduct. For parents, I provide guidance on the application process, including personal statements and registration timelines. A strong interview can distinguish a pupil from other candidates with comparable scores, and I treat this preparation with the same rigour as the academic components.

Choosing the Right School

Selecting the right school is one of the most significant decisions a family will make. I support parents in understanding the differences between schools, their academic culture, pastoral provision, and what each looks for in a candidate. With experience of multiple school entry processes, I can offer informed perspective on which environments may suit a particular child and how to weigh up competing offers.

Application Support for Parents

The entrance exam process involves more than preparing the child. I help parents navigate registration deadlines, understand bursary and scholarship options, and prepare any supporting documentation that schools require. I aim to reduce the administrative burden so that families can focus on supporting their child.

Ongoing Support to University

My commitment does not end when the offer letter arrives. I provide ongoing academic support to help pupils thrive at their new school and, in time, achieve offers from their desired universities. For those looking further ahead, I also offer dedicated university-level mentoring and support.
